Chapter Seven

“Why did you leave the army, Jed?”

Beside her, McKenna felt Jed tense and knew that the question, asked by an elderly Hamilton aunt seated opposite them, annoyed him. He tapped his finger against his glass and frowned.

“The life expectancy isn’t good.” he replied.

McKenna winced at his cold, flat don’t-pursue-this answer but his aunt, bless her, wasn’t discouraged. “And photography? Isn’t that a rather…unstable career? Does your father approve of you travelling the world snapping pictures?”

Unfortunately her question dropped into one of those spaces when the entire table was silent and eleven heads swivelled in their direction. McKenna watched as Jed and his father locked eyes and was reminded of a nature program of two buffalo bulls locking horns she’d recently watched with Daisy.

A cold smile, borrowed she was sure from a great white shark, pulled up the corners of the general’s mouth. “Jed doesn’t care whether I approve or not. He doesn’t have an ounce of respect for me, as a father or as a soldier.”

“Certainly not as a husband.” Jed muttered, his voice so low that only McKenna caught his words.

“You taught us that it was rude to disagree with our elders so I won’t.” Jed raised his voice but his tone remained cool and free of emotion.

Note to self: do not piss Jed off.

“I also taught you to honor traditions and to serve your country.” Thaddius snapped.

“I did.” Jed calmly said but McKenna felt the slight bouncing of his knee next to hers.

She placed her hand on his thigh and squeezed and he immediately stilled. His hand covered hers and she suspected he didn’t know that his grip on her fingers was tighter than she liked.

“Stop it you two.” Leah ordered as her guests did the tennis movement, head and eyes flicking from one end of the table to the next, waiting to see who would score the winning shot. “This is my engagement party so behave!”

“Yes, Jed, you are being inexcusably rude.”

McKenna narrowed her eyes at the general’s wife, Angela. There was nothing angelic in those calculating eyes, in the frankly appreciative and sultry looks she’d been sending Jed all evening. McKenna’s female intuition told her that Angela chastising Jed had nothing to do with her siding with her husband and everything to do with the fact that Jed had deliberately ignored her, and her impressive cleavage, all evening.

Jed’s smile held no amusement as he looked at his father’s trophy wife. “Luckily, I care as much for your opinion, Angela, as I do for his.”

It took a while for Jed’s words to sink in and when they did, Angela pouted and turned to her husband. “Thad!”

McKenna rolled her eyes, annoyed. She had no patience with women who poked the bear and then squealed when the beast bared his teeth. And, judging by all the animal references, she really should stop watching nature programs with Daisy.

“Apologise to my wife!” Thaddius roared.

Eyes widened and mouths dropped open but Jed, looking weary, just shook his head and pushed his chair back to stand up.
